What's the best business master's degree for an engineer

What's the best business master's degree for an engineer?
I've decided to spend no more than 10 years of my lifetime in college, since I plan to retire when I'm 50 (55 for the latest). So far, I've spent six year in college. I spent four years doing my bachelor's in engineering with an associate's in economics, and two years doing my master's full time while working part-time. The plan was to take a break for two years and then go for my PhD, but I realized that I'm not very creative and don't think I'm ready for the PhD. Instead, I'd like to get a business degree and then I'll decide if I want to take a managerial role or strike it out on my own. Now, I don't know what business degree to get. Do I choose an MBA, an MS in economics or an MS in engineering management. It's so confusing! You'd naturally think engineering management, but there are managers in my companies who have mba's. Then, you'd think economics, but then there's the mba which stresses on economics. I just don't know what the hell to do. God, I wish I was an actor or professional athlete right now so I wouldnt' have to go through this crap, you know. With school it's always something!!! What should I do?

Ask around among americans that have finished an MBA they will give you that information - no other people will be able to give you any kind of valuable information on this. THere are however universities that are known to specialise in cerrtain subjects: - Kellog (marketing) - I believe that is in California - MIT (all technical subjects) - Chicago - Illinois - Berkeley - government law (California)

i was thinking of joining in california state university dominguez hills. it was good. india?

The top 5: Harvard, Stanford, Penn, MIT, Northwestern, and Chicago. The other top 45 B-Schools, according to US News & World report, can be found by using the link below. As for getting in, well...all programs have different strengths and weaknesses, but generally, having good "real world" work experience, a good academic background, and a drive that comes through in your app (I once knew someone who was waitlisted at the U of Michigan [#11 on the list], but requested an interview, which was not required of applicants, and therefore gained admission by showing drive, confidence, and determination). Good luck!

The value of an MBA is declining quickly. I wouldn't spend the money. If you want an advanced degree I'd look into something else. Accounting/tax is a growing industry right now.

2
MBA is not a field, it is a degree. Business Administration is a field. It's all about how to run a business/manage people. There are different specializations, such as human resource management, finance, accounting, management, marketing, etc. If you want to study to earn an MBA, you should contact some universities and find out what entrance and graduation requirements are.

3
I agree with amie about the value declining. However, in case u still want to do it, its a degree in which you can specialise in finance, marketing, HR, systems etc... It teaches you the tools to use when you're performing an administrative job in a company or business enterprise. However, it helps if you've got relevant work experience before that. You must select the field of specialisation depending on your interests and the market siuation. These days, HR is a safe bet. However, don't expect fab salaries after you pass out. That's just a myth. The salary will depend on the copmpany policy, your field of specialisation, the college you passed out from and the grade or percentage you got. Most companies make you start at rockbottom after your MBA and you have to work your way up. It could help you learn new techniquews and strategies but if you're not planning on starting your own business or if you don't intend to work in an administrative capacity eg. marketing manager, GM, operations manager etc.... then its not much use... Even if you want to, an MBA will not be a ticket. It will simply provide you tools to improve your work performance. Your promotions depend on hwo you use these tools and the results you produce as well as your rapport with your boss, So you can try it if you're interested in such fields but keep your expectations realistic.

Go to grad school.

2
Usually it is a better idea to get a bachelor's degree in something else, if you are going to get an MBA later on. But in most cases, what you do is to work for a few years, and then apply to go to an MBA program.

3
Yes, I currently have an AA (Associate in Arts) but I am a Senior finishing up my BBA (bachelors of business administration) and will be moving on to my MBA in the Fall next year. PS My BBA is actually focus in Management, HR. So you should also do something specific and not general if you plan on getting your MBA. Also you could apply MBA to another degree even something like Nursing or whatnot. An MBA would amplify your degree. This is a common college path :) Good luck.

4
A bachelor's degree in business is a great idea for getting an MBA later in life (so are plenty of other degrees - engineering, economics even high-performers in any liberal arts area). After your undergrad, you'll need to work for several years before applying to any top MBA program. The value of the undergrad business degree is that it can lead you to a good/applicable career in business. This will give you great experience to bring to the classroom (for your understanding of the class material and others') and will help you write your essays that show why you are ready to pursue an MBA.

What graduate degree to get in business. MBA, Master of Business, Master of Commerce etc

What graduate degree to get in business. MBA, Master of Business, Master of Commerce etc.?
I have my undergrad degree in business, but wanted to go for my Masters. But there are so many different degrees out there, so I am a little confused. The MBA for instance. I have been told numerous times that it is mainly for people who do not have an undergrad degree in business and teaches them how to run a business. Specializations are also available with this degree. The Master of Business etc.: This seems to be a business degree for which an undergrad degree in business is required. Here there are specializations available as well. I am unsure which of those one to choose. When I take a look at the curriculum, the MBA seems a lot easier as it just teaches the most basic classes in business that I already took. The Masters seems much harder as you need to have an undergrad degree in business already and therefore builds up on that. I am very unsure what degree to go for. I know that the MBA has a high repuation in the States, but I feel as if the classes are just a repeat of what I already learned. I already went to lectures at good schools and it just confirmed my thinking. But what degree will be better regarded? I know that they are both Master degrees.

Masters gives you specialization while MBA gives you general managerial skills. I personally believe that the way forward is through specialization. Go for the Masters as it will help you hone the technical specific skills you would have gained at the Bachelors level.

I would recommend getting your MBA. It is more highly regarded in the United States. As far as it being easier I'm not too sure about that. I would say that they are both tough. With a MBA degree you will have a variety of options for high position jobs. I went through an amMBA program which is just an accelerated track. I got my MBA in a little over a year as opposed to two years. It is something to consider. http://www.adelphi.edu/manhattan/business.php

To get your MBA, you will need to spend about 4-5 years in college. The first two years would be to get your BBA. Then you can apply to a MBA program which takes from 2 to 3 years. But, a MBA is not a golden ticket into whatever job you want. It does, however, open doors to positions that were not open to you before.

While you can get an MBA after almost any Bachelors level degree, a basic course in economics and another in business law are good places to start. Also you won't go wrong with some knowledge of tax, accounting, and budgeting [usually that course is called something like 'managerial accounting.'] However, I know MBAs who got their degrees in engineering, art, education, of course business, nursing, and a few others I can't recall right now. Good luck to you

2
MBA programs accept students in any undergraduate field. They prefer students who do not have a business background because they give you the business training but they cannot provide the broad background that managers should have. I have taught MBA students with degrees in Music, Medicine, Dentistry, Law, Psychology, Political Science, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, and many other fields. Most MBA programs prefer students with 2-3 years work experience after the first degree., Some accept students right out of college if they have good grades and a high GMAT score. Some MBA programs are designed specifically for new college graduates without work experience. But in those programs you don't get the benefit of learning from other students who have work experience. A lot of valuable learning takes place through class interaction. Before you decide on an MBA program explore the Internet for information on available programs. There is a lot of information available. Some sites are limited to specific countries, such as Germany, UK, or Australia. There is a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. The nice thing is that it allows you to find the program that best fits you. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, executive, and accelerated), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. Schools report their accreditation status look for AACSB accreditation or at least AACSB membership), tuition cost, number of students, class sizes, program length, and a lot of other data. Schools provide data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, joint degrees, joint degrees such as MBA/JD, and much more. You can use it to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre-applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria. some of the other sites are less comprehensive, but all are useful.

You need a bachelor's degree before you can apply to master's programs. The bachelor's takes about 4 years. A typical Master of Arts, Master of Science, or Master of Business Administration takes 2 years of full time study. Some people get done a little sooner and some take a little longer. There are many fields of business that are studied at the master's level, management is only one of these. Many people in poli sci go for a Master of Public Administration - this one is a touch longer and usually takes 2-3 years of full time study. So, from high school to master's degree in business or poli sci would be about 5-8 years. 5 years if you move through the bachelor's and master's quickly (I did that with mine) -- 8 years if you take your time and don't rush (my wife is doing that with hers).

IMO getting an MBA from a good school will advance your career substantially, but just getting the letters after your name is of questionable value. As a hiring manager I've been shocked that people with MBA on their resume sometimes didn't know even the basics of business/finance (ex. what Net Present Value is). For me, an MBA raised my salary $40K right out of school and allowed me a much wider set of career options on a steeper trajectory (so definitely worth it).

2
It wasn't for me. At a cost of nearly $30,000 a year to get a $40,000 a year job (if I'm lucky), I said no and got a CDL instead. 1/6 the cost of an MBA and I make just as much. However, if you qualify for scholarships that allow you to go basically for free (or even provide living on money in addition), then that is definately worth it.

3
It depends on what you are wanting to do with your career. If you are going into high-level management or high-level administration then it is necessary. It is a nice tool for teaching college level. But you must be willing to have your life disrupted for two years or on hold for one year. If you can earn your MBA right after college, you may be able to get financial aid and you will be able to defer those college loans. The down side is that you may be over $100,000 in debt when you are done.

To pursue the nursing aspect you will have to obtain a bachelors in nursing and certify as a nurse. I am quite positive on this aspect - in particular obtain your RN certification. Once you have obtained that then you pursue either the MS in Nursing Administration / MBA. Here is a question? Do you realize there is an equivalent to the MBA for those within the medical careers. It is a Master's of Public Health or Public Health Administration. These programs are designed for public health proffessionals who are seeking to advance into management levelsin the design, implementation, and administration of public health agencies. If I were you and this was my goal then I would possibly consider this route: BS in Nursing then National Certification as RN then Master's of Public Health. The MPH will provide you with the information / and background that combines the Masters of Science in Nursing Administration and the MBA for health professionals. If you already have attained your bachelor's degree then the option mentioned by the previous poster would be the choice I would select. My suggested option works under the assumption that you have not attained your bachelor's degree. If you have a bachelor's already there is no reason to reinvent the wheel.

However, you may be a super student and don't need it. It also depends on the school. Higher ranked schools can be picky. A low ranked school will let anyone who can spell their name in.

A master's degree in international business is less frequently offered than an MBA with a concentration in international business. I see no reason why your planned undergraduate major(s) would prevent your admission to either program. Admission opportunities for the best MBA programs are often significantly improved by a few years of work experience, preferably in business, after the bachelor's degree is awarded. You might also benefit by teaching English in Japan for a year after your bachelor's degree is awarded.

I am about to graduate with a business management bachelor's degree. Having barely looked into master's programs, I notice there is a master's program for 'Communications'....however, it's in the Arts & Sciences Department, and not the business department. So I'm wondering if I can immediately jump into Communications, or if i can only get my Masters in a business related field???

NO, you can get a masters in any field you want that you get accepted into. You just have to take some undergrad background classes along with the masters classes. The program will tell you which ones exactly (or the course catalog may also list them),or the academic adviser for that master.

2
you can do anything you want in the Master's Degree program. most bachelor's degree programs will let you jump into any Master's Program. However, you might want to take selected in the Communications major to meet with what you have in the Bachelors degree. Talk with your school counselor for grad studies and they will give you the best option that fits you.

You will want to make time for yourself, be that dating, hobbies, etc otherwise you will go crazy from the work and stress. Just remember that you won't be able to party all of the time.

I will graduate with a BS in Electrical Engineering in May 07 and I'm looking into Graduate studies in business and/or management. Any advice for a decent program/area of choice. I'm in the NY area, so I'd say something in the NE region. Thanks for your time.

Would it be logical to get a bachelor's in accounting (undergrad) and master's in business management

Would it be logical to get a bachelor's in accounting (undergrad) and master's in business management?
I want to be an accountant (probably a CPA), so would it be logical to get a bachelor's at undergrad school in accounting and, since the grad school that I really want to go to doesn't offer an accounting master's, get a master's in business management in grad school? Or is it pretty much necessary to continue with accounting in grad school if I want to be an accountant?

Several states require people who wish to sit for the CPA exam to have at least 150 hours of courses, which basically means a bachelor's and master's. Not sure about the state that you live in, but in my state you must have 33 hours of accounting courses--which can easily be fulfilled by the requirements for an undergraduate major in accounting. Most people I know who sit for the exam get their master's in accounting, based on the area of accounting they wish to practice after passing the exam. It's totally up to you what you decide to do, but I think getting your master's in accounting would be more beneficial (in terms of keeping your mind refreshed for test material, etc.) The only other option that I would consider is getting an MBA with a concentration in accounting. MBAs are highly sought after and could help you in accounting or if you eventually chose to pursue another career path.

This is not a question you ask a bunch of strangers. Someone might tell you marketing; you will go into marketing and find out your passion does not lie there. Do your own research. Figure out which branch you know you will be good in.

3
Brain, I cant tell you right away which field you can opt for.... Read my answer & you decide on that.... There are so many branches in MBA I am going to list some of them.... MBA in Accounting MBA in Criminal Justice MBA in Consulting MBA in e-Business MBA in Education MBA in Engineering MBA in Entrepreneurship MBA in Executive MBA in Finance MBA in General management MBA in Global management MBA in Health Care MBA in Hospitality and Tourism MBA in Human resources MBA in Information systems MBA in Industrial management MBA in Leadership MBA in Knowledge management MBA in Marketing MBA in Media MBA in Nonprofit and Goverment MBA in Organizational MBA in Project management MBA in Real Estate MBA in Sport management MBA in Technology management MBA in Telecommunications MBA in Supply Chain Management Point 1: You need to analyse these branches with your area of expertise & your interest. Point 2: The most cherished branch is Marketing, then comes Finance, Human Resource, General Management. These are Ever Green Branches. Point 3: Can you predict what type of business will survive for another 30 years? If you ask me Power sector, Telecommunication, Information Technology, Logistics,Health care. Point 4: Predict the type of Management branches which has future? From my view it's Project Management, Supply Chain Management, Global Management, Technology Management, Health care, Media. Point 5: Make a list of the above said points. Go through your strength & weekness & my friend make a wise decision. Point 6: After charting out these things get a Expert's advice. Sounds ok.

There are several universities in the US that have an MBA program and don't require the GMAT and some of them are online. Currently, I am enrolled in an MBA with Accounting Concentration program at Saint Leo University which is located in Tampa, FL. The University of Maryland also offers an MBA program online, through their University College. Before selecting any program, just make sure that they are accredited by the appropriate state boards. Also take a look at the classes offered to find out if they appeal to you. You can take a look at: www.saintleo.edu www.umuc.edu Good luck!

How useful is a master's degree in international relations/business (or just in general)

How useful is a master's degree in international relations/business (or just in general)?
I'm considering pursuing a masters in international relations or business (probably business) after taking a year or so off from school. (Taking the year off because I am applying to law schools but realized that I probably won't be able to go without being drowned in loans and job prospects aren't as good as I thought. Don't have the time or money to do last minute master's applications and GRE.) How useful would a masters in international business be? Is it worth the time and money?

Well, its tough to say very much since I don't know anything about you and your ambitions. But I can tell you about my experiences. I'm going for a masters in aeronautical and astronautical engineering during night school, but I don't think I'll get a pay raise or better jobs because of it. I hope so - its a lot of work - but I haven't found anything that gives me much hope. So I'm not sure you'll see a lot more success with a masters in international business. I think employers are more concerned with work experience than education (after B.S. degree) so they don't value education as much. On the other hand, you may really enjoy getting a masters degree and that's valuable in its own right. Good luck!

First, you need to find a university you want to earn your Master's from. Every university costs a different amount. They can be drastically different, too. For example tuition at Cornell University can cost up to $30,000 but tuition at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania (my alma mater) costs just over $5,000. And that doesn't include fees, books, room and board, etc. You can also apply for scholarships which can help reduce the price, but you have to search for those scholarships, too. GRE is the typical entrance exam for most Master's programs, but some will also accept the MATs (Miller Analogies Test). Once you figure out where you want to go, then you can find out what they require. There is no one price for a Master's in the USA. Each college determines their own cost and sometimes it is a huge price to pay. Do a lot of research because there are thousands of Master degree awarding universities in the USA. Good luck!

Yes of course. MBA´s are generally aimed at people who have completed non-business or economic degree´s pretty much any university will consider you eligible.

2
You can, but Engineers should generally get Master's in Engineering Management, or Technology Management, not an MBA (unless they want to leave Engineering completely).

3
yes

4
Yes, I have done it. It is very helpful since you will only spend the first 4 to 8 years in Civil Engineering doing actual engineering and design the rest of your career, you will be overseeing the design team, delaying with clients, going out and getting new clients and projects, interacting with the public and government entities, etc. So having an MBA helps with a lot of these duties. Of course, there are no jobs in the Construction field that includes Architects, Civil Engineers and Construction Managers. The field in the U.S. has shed about half of its jobs over the past 2 to 3 years and is expecting to lose more. There will not be a recovery for this industry. The only people that are hiring are the financial sector and the medical sector.

Business degree might help you get your foot in the door. And the computer Science degree, if you put it in the resume right, might help them think that you'd be good at number analyzing. It's really all up to the people hiring. I've known people who have great degrees having to take crappy jobs and people with no degrees get amazing jobs.

So you sincerely want to get rich? Many graduates want to be "investment bankers". Few survive the brutal weedout. Unless you specifically go into the back room as a (high paid) "Quant," you'll be in the front peddling dubious securities to unsuspecting suckers by telemarketing. It's not much different from selling used cars.

There are far too many universities in the United States to name here, if you are unsure about which one then the best indicator is your budget - how much are you wanting to spend for tuition? Most of the top business schools have extremly high tuition rates. However in my opinion the universities with the best MBA progams are as follows: University of Chicago UPenn (Wharton) Harvard University University of Michigan Stanford They are my top five business programs in the United States.

I can only give you my experience. If you get a bachelor's in business admin, you should be covered to go straight to the MBA. If you got, say, a bachelor's in Nursing, then you would have to take prerequisite courses in the MBA program (at my university). An adviser would help you out with that and tell you what you need. For instance, the prerequisites for the MBA at my university basically goes over what you would have learned in most of the business and marketing classes. There are two prerequisites and the other is a finance class - you learn in this class the important stuff you would have learned in finance class at the bachelor's level. Basically, the prerequisites are just to catch you up on bachelor's level business information, and at my university there are only two prerequisite classes for those who didn't get a bachelor's in business admin. The prerequisites are master's classes, though, so they're not bachelor classes, if you know what I mean. I can't speak for your specific case or any school you're thinking about transfering to. The university should have the required classes for each degree on their website or you can call/email and ask this information.

I worked at GS, and FOR SURE, an MBA is the right way to go, but ull only get to work there if you go to an Ivy League, or smthing very close!

2
Well I think you may be confused so far. Management and Global Management would actually be "majors" that would fall under a Master of Business Administration Degree. You'd say for instance that you have an MBA with a concentration in Management or Global Management. Goldman Sachs is a company that is only going to hire elite individuals (i.e. those who graduate from a top ten business school such as Michigan, Stanford, Yale, Harvard, etc.). With these schools come strict standards that must be met for acceptance. You would likely need a G.P.A. during your undergraduate degree in the 3.5 range or higher, a GMAT score in the 700 range, and a couple of years of work experience after you finish your bachelors. There are very very few people who are accepted into an MBA program without at least 3 or 4 years of work experience in management after earning their BBA. Graduating from one of the top schools listed above you can expect to initially earn a base salary of $100,000 a year give or take $20K (this does not include bonuses which can substantially raise your salary). Within 5 years of starting at a company the typical salary for an MBA graduate will double. Now, we've established that you need an MBA. The proper Major that you'd want is Finance regardless of what you actually wind up doing. Every company is concerned about making money, and in the wake of the accounting scandals that have hit companies in the last few years a finance degree has become highly desirable. Just realize that it won't come quickly. You will have to apply yourself for more than 10 years (4 years undergrad, 4 years work experience, 2 years MBA) before you actually get to that job at Goldman Sachs that you want. Best of Luck.... Good Goals...

It really depends on the college or university you get accepted into. There are a variety of places to attend. Some schools are cheaper than others. Of course, you'd be considered an "out-of-state student" or "international student" so your tuition will be higher than someone living in the state where the college is located. I'd guess anywhere from $15,000-$50,000 - but this is just a wild guess. You can visit home pages of the colleges your interested in - most list tuition and fees. Check out tuition at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan at: http://www.umich.edu/~regoff/tuition/full.html#Grad_Bus Compare to Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI (just fifteen minutes away): http://www.emich.edu/public/cob/gr/mba.html http://www.emich.edu/controller/sbs/tuitionfeesoutline.html

They too are losing jobs--don't be fooled!

3
Of course they get jobs as do graduates from most other MBA programs. In today's economy it is just not as easy, and many don't get jobs, or don't get the jobs they want. If you start in an MBA program now, by the time you graduate the job market will be totally different. Schools report their accreditation status, tuition cost, number of students, class sizes, program length, and a lot of other data. Schools provide data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, joint degrees, and much more. You can use it to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria. some of the other sites are less comprehensive, but all are useful.
